History

The Department of Physics (the first official physics education program in Iran) was founded in 1935 by the late Prof. Mahmoud Hessaby (1903 - 1992) at the main campus of the university as a subdivision of the College of Science. Later, some of Hessaby's early students, including Prof. Kamaledin Jenab, Prof. Ali Asghar Khamsavi, and Prof. Ziaeddin Esmaeel Beigi joined him to  expand the department and train the first generation of Iranian physicists, engineers, and teachers, who themselves became professionals in their fields and served in many other universities, schools, and research or industrial centers around the country.

The Department of Physics moved to its current location in 1972, and by 2006 it had grown to comprise several independent research groups. The current groups are as follows: "Atmoic & Molecular Physics", "Condensed Matter Physics", "Gravitation & Cosmology", and "High Energy Physics". Please refer to the individual pages for each group for more details.

Our department offers well-established programs at bachelor's, master's, and PhD levels in theoretical, computational, and experimental physics in a variety of interesting fields. There are several educational and research laboratories, as well as other scientific facilities (physics library, computer sites, etc.) in the department to help the students and researchers better learn and teach physics, or conduct their research projects. More information on educational and research activities can be found in the specific sections on the department main page.

In the Department of Physics faculty members, staff, and students all work together to create and maintain a scientific and creative environment for learning and developing new ideas.
