Programs leading to a Ph.D. degree in physics
The Department of Physics at University of Tehran also offers a graduate program leading to a doctoral degree in physics. Research opportunities are available in various fields...
- Atomic & Molecular Physics
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Elementary Particle Physics
- Gravitation & Astrophysics
- Nano Physics
- Nuclear Physics
Course work requirements for each graduate student are determined individually based, mainly, upon their master's degree and field of interest. Admitted students are supposed to work with a research adviser who is selected amongst the department's faculty members. The course work of the doctoral degree is expected to be completed within the first two years of the study. All students are required to take a qualifying examination, usually before the end of the second year of their study, in which an oral examination based on their proposed Ph.D. thesis is required to be carried out.
The research work usually begins during or at the end of the first year. Doctoral candidates are expected to complete all degree requirements and defend their thesis within five years. The minimum requirement for a Ph.D. degree is 39 credit hours, with a minimum of 12 hours of lecture courses, and 3 credit hours of seminar, in addition to 24 credit hours of doctoral thesis.
