Slow light effect and it’s applications

The phenomenon of slow light attracted many interests in the past decade because of the successful early demonstrations of very slow propagation speeds and even stopped light. We will try to enhance this phenomena and then discuss some applications. Two main applications will be discussed in detail. First, MHz order Optical frequency filter with ≈30dB suppression and very large acceptance angle is demonstrated via persistent spectral hole burning (PSHB) in rare earth doped crystals. Second, employing slow light effect inside cavity to reduce cavity-linewidth up to more than 4 orders of magnitude. The dispersion profiles are engineered using optical pumping techniques creating significant semi-permanent but reprogrammable changes of the rare-earth absorption profiles.
